Will Redknapp Even Get a Mention?

By: b-man | October 22nd, 2007

It’s looking as if England may not qualify for Euro 2008. In fact it’s looking probable that they won’t make it to Austria/Switzerland.

If the unimaginable does happen, and England fail to qualify from one of the easiest groups we’ve had in recent history, then I’m sure the majority of England fans will be calling for McChicken’s head. Although I may not agree that he should get the sack despite what would be a disaster, I am sure that most fans would.

The usual names would come up; Big Phil Scolari, Guus Hiddink, Martin O’Neil, probably Arsene Wenger and the jobless Jose Mourinho would appear too. I’m not sure whether any of these would take the job. We can be almost 100% sure that Wenger wouldn’t take the job. We can be almost 90% sure that Mourinho wouldn’t take it either. I also doubt that Scolari would take it. He turned us down once, why wouldn’t he turn us down again? And why would Guus Hiddink want the job? After all, if this situation does arise, then that would mean that Russia qualified at the expense of England. Martin O’Neil? I doubt it. He’s doing well at Villa. He’s got money to spend, the fans are happy, he’s assembled a squad that I’m sure he’s pleased with. Why would he leave all of that for the riskiest job in the world?!?

And anyway, I thought we all wanted an English manager from now on? After Sven, who as it turns out, aint’ all that bad after all, we all swore to keep the job in the hands of an Englishman!

So up pop the names… Big Sam, urm, Steve Coppell, urm, urm, Stuart Pearce?… That’s about it really!

But hang on. What about the bargain hunter that is Harry Redknapp? I remember last time England were looking for a new gaffer, I heard the names of Steve Coppel and Stuart Pearce mentioned. I heard Steve McClaren’s name obviously (that’s turned out well, hasn’t it?), I even heard the name Aidy Boothroyd! And yet not a mention of Mr. Reliable himself!

Now don’t get me wrong, I do not want Harry Redknapp to leave Pompey, I remember the last time he left for a while (Monsieur Perrin, I’m looking at you). All I want is for him to get a bit of recocgnition. All I want is for him to get what he surely deserves. All I want is for his name to get a mention.
