Portsmouth 0-0 Manchester City
By: b-man | November 11th, 2007In a game that I thought would contain a good few goals, it turned out that out-of-favour striker Dave Nugent came the closest to scoring. After a long ball and a header down from a City defender, Nugent unleashed a venomous strike that beat Joe Hart in the Man City goal only to hit the inside of the post and deflect out.
The game was relatively even, however if there was one side who deserved to win I would say it was Pompey (although I may be slightly biased). There was a good shout for a penalty in the first half when Kanu had his shirt grabbed by Richard Dunne, although if the boot was on the other foot I’d probably say it wasn’t a penalty.
Harry Redknapp went with a 4-4-2 system today, rather than the usual 4-5-1. The back five was James(GK) Johnson(RB) Campbell(CB) Distin(CB) Pamarot(LB). The four man midfield consisted of Utaka on the right (although was subbed at half time for Matty Taylor), Krancjar on the left; cutting in-field on every occassion, and Sean and Sulley in the centre. Kanu and Benjani started up front.
Usually Pompey really dominate the midfield, what with the usual 5 man midfield. The three central players (usually Diop, Muntari and Davis) normally control the tempo of the game, and the opposition struggle to break through us. Also we often start attacks by winning the ball in central midfield and looking for the early ball to either Krancjar, Utaka or Benjani. I felt today that Redknapp went with two up front in the 4-4-2 to try and get all three points however, I don’t necessarily feel that by going with the 4-4-2 over the usual 4-5-1, we are any more attacking. I feel it just makes us more open to attacks and we struggle to dictate the game as we usually do.
The winner of ‘Predict-a-score!!!’, despite not guessing the right result was ‘The-Man-In-Your-Head’ who predicted a draw, but a 1-1 draw. Well done.

I agree they should play 4-5-1.
I’m impressed by your tactical awareness!
